BVSPCA announce plans for new Dover location

BVSPCA recieving grant from Petco Foundation

The Brandywine Valley SPCA is planning to open a pet resource center in Dover.

The new location will be the no-kill animal shelter organization’s first in Kent County.

It will offer veterinary services, behavior counseling and will house stray dogs.

BVSPCA Spokeswoman Linda Torelli says the organization is glad to expand into central Delaware.

“With the resource center opening up, we now have brick and mortar locations in all three of the counties,” said Torelli. “It was really important to us to be connected to the community. If they lose a pet, they can easily get it back or if they need help keeping their pet in their home during times of trouble.”

The site of the BVSPCA location is an 1800 square foot building off Horsepond Road that used to be an animal shelter more than a decade ago.

The organization also plans to use it to host humane education initiatives like its summer day camp for kids called “Critter Camp.”

Support comes from a $500,000 grant from the Petco Foundation.

The gift will also help fund two mega-adoption events in which the BVSPCA connects more than 1,000 animals with families in two days. Petco has supported the events since their inception in 2016.

“Petco Foundation’s past support has been pivotal to our success, and we appreciate the foundation’s continued confidence and collaboration as we grow to help even more animals,” said BVSPCA CEO Adam Lamb.

This year’s mega-adoption event will take place on December 8 and 9 at the Delaware State Fairgrounds.
