Heatwave hits the First State

Delaware Public Media

After a string of hot and humid days, record heat could hit part of the First State Thursday.

A warm front moving up from the south should continue to make things pretty hot and sticky.

The National Weather Service says temperatures could hit in the upper-90s Thursday - with a heat index in the triple digits.

"It’s bringing a lot of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico up, as well in the Atlantic. So the combination of the heat and humidity is really going to make things rather oppressive here," NWS Meteorologist Mitchell Gaines said.

The city of Georgetown could break a 30-year-old heat record Thursday with temperatures forecast as high as 98 degrees.

But Gaines said the heat won't last forever.

"We’re looking at a cold front moving through from the northwest for the weekend, which will knock high temperatures down into the mid-80s."
