DelDOT gearing up for winter weather

Delaware Public Media

The First State could get a taste of winter precipitation starting tonight. The Delaware Department of Transportation says it’s prepared.

Freezing rain, sleet and snow could be on tap Friday night and into Saturday. The National Weather Service calls for a 70% chance of precipitation.

DelDOT Spokesman Jim Westhoff said crews in all three counties are as prepared as they can be.

"We are spending all day today applying salt to the roads so that when we do get any snow or wintry mix it will stop or even slow down any accumulation of snow or ice on the roads," Westhoff said.

He cautioned drivers to take it slow if they have to travel in bad weather.

"When it’s dark it can be hard to tell if the road is wet or if it’s icy. So please be very careful driving tonight or tomorrow morning," he said.

New Castle County has a greater chance for snow, but ice could accumulate in Kent and Sussex Counties overnight.
