Missing DAFB airman declared dead

Officials at Dover Air Force Base have declared a missing airman dead.

436th Airlift Wing commander Col. Michael Grismer made the decision to declare Senior Airman Keifer Huhman of the 436th Communications Squadron deceased Tuesday after “closely reviewing all investigative evidence and in accordance with current Air Force guidance,” according to a statement released by the base.

"This decision was made with a heavy heart. Each of us is heartbroken by the loss of our wingman, Keifer," said Col. Grismer in a statement. "In moments like this, all of Team Dover feels the impact of such tragedy. Our most sincere condolences go out to Kiefer's family, friends, and teammates here at Team Dover. We also thank all our local authorities for their professionalism, compassion, and tireless efforts in searching for Senior Airman Kiefer Huhman."

Base officials say the facts surrounding into Huhman’s disappearance remain under investigation, but would not provide any further information.

Huhman failed to report for duty Monday, February 8 and was last seen the night before leaving his home at Blue Hen Apartments in Dover.

Later that week, authorities learned Huhman’s blue Ford truck had been towed from the shoulder of the William Roth Bridge by State Police late Sunday night, February 7.  Air and water searches were launched, but turned up nothing.

A memorial service for Huhman will be held tomorrow at 3 pm in the base’s main chapel.
