Delaware gets a burst of snow

Delaware Public Media

Some areas in the First State have seen a bit more snow than expected Monday.

The winter weather arrived in Sussex County this morning and has piled up in a number of locations, especially the further inland you move.

Laurel reports 3.7 inches on the ground and nearly 3 inches had fallen in Bridgeville.

In Kent County, Harrington was just over two inches and Dover has nearly an two inches on the ground.

In New Castle County, most places have about an inch.

DelDOT reports in Sussex County primary roads are wet, while secondary and minor roads are wet or snow covered. Crews are plowing and treating primary and secondary roads and bridges.

In Kent County, DelDOT says primary and secondary roads are wet or snow covered. Minor roads are also snow covered.  Crews there are plowing and treating roads as needed.

In New Castle County, crews are monitoring conditions and treating roads as needed.

The snow has prompted Delaware Tech to close its Georgetown and Dover campuses.  Its Wilmington and Stanton campuses will close at 4:30 pm. Goldey-Beacom College has canceled its evening classes

The National Weather Service is forecasting 4-6 inches of snow in Suusex County, 2-4 in Kent and 1-3 in Wilmington and northern New Castle County before temperatures start to rise this afternoon and evening.  That will turn the snow to rain from south to north and the entire state is expected to see rain through the day Tuesday.
