First State begins recovery from blizzard

Delaware Public Media

The snowstorm is gone and the sun is shining – but now the work of cleaning up is underway in earnest throughout the state.

State officials say primary roads around the state are generally clear – even in New Castle and Kent Counties where the most snow fell, but secondary roads and neighborhoods remain problematic.

The Level 2 driving restriction in New Castle and Kent counties was lifted at 10 this morning.  But a Level 1 driving restriction is still in place in all three counties – that encourages people to drive only if necessary.  Also, Wilmington remains under a Level 2 restriction.

Gov. Jack Markell says keeping people off the roads will help speed the process of plowing.

All DART service throughout the state also remains suspended Sunday and the state is still under a state of emergency.

In Sussex County, specifically by the coast where flooding was a issue yesterday, Route 1 between Hudson Road north of Bethany Beach and Dewey Beach remains closed along with a handful of other roads because of high water.

Even when the water recedes on that closed stretch of Route 1, DelDOT says it will take some time to reopen because it will need to be inspected for damage. The concern is that water scoured under the road surface.

Gov. Markell is scheduled to tour the hardest hit areas of Sussex County Sunday afternoon to assess the damage done.
