As a holiday gift, New Castle County is offering amnesty for library patrons who owe up to $25 in fines. The opportunity is limited, starting Monday and and ending Sunday, December 20th.
"We have a low threshold," said Diana Brown, the Community Services Manager for New Castle County. "If you owe $5 or more in fines, you’re not permitted to check out additional library materials."
She says that low threshold is a barrier for some.
Amnesty will restore library privileges, including internet access for many who were blocked after accumulating fines or fees of $5 or more.
"It is pretty easy to get into a situation where you owe $25. So I think re-establishing borrowing privileges is a major focus of what we’re doing," said Brown.
At the same time, county libraries are collecting food donations to support Local Union 459 Needy Family Fund’s annual food drive. Donation bins are located at library entrances and exits.
