Delaware ranked third on list of friendliest states for biking

Delaware is now third on the list of America’s friendliest states for biking - and the highest ranked state on the East Coast - according to rankings issued by the League of American Bicyclists. The state of Washington is first, while Alabama ranks last.

The organization says Delaware does particularly well when it comes to enacting policies that protect cyclists - like safe passing and vulnerable user laws.  It also points to the First State’s strong bike education efforts.

"We’ve actually partnered with the Department of Education on some enhancements to the curriculum that highlight the use of bicycling. Not only from an education mode but also from a health and fitness and activity perspective," said Drew Boyce, the Director of Planning for the Delaware Department of Transportation.

DelDOT’s annual bike summit was last week and Boyce says it’s just one of the initiatives that bolsters the First State’s bike friendly reputation.

"The theme of that summit was every age, every skill, everyone. So not only that 12 year old on their bicycle, but also that mom that feels comfortable that that 12 year old is safe," said Boyce.

The League told the state it can improve when it comes to encouraging new development that is more bike and transit friendly and by creating Delaware’s first bike lane. Boyce says DelDOT is working with communities to create landscapes where homes and schools are closer together to encourage residents to use green modes of transportation.
