Forecast says entire state can expect significant snowfall

Delaware Public Media

Forecasters predict that entire state of Delaware will receive several inches of snow Thursday.

Rain will turn into sleet, then snow in the early hours of the morning on Thursday. In New Castle and Kent Counties, snowfall will start between 2 and 5 am. In Sussex, snowfall will start around 6 to 7 am after a period of freezing rain.

Kristin Klein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service station in Mount Holly, New Jersey, says more snow is expected upstate than downstate.

“As far as accumulations go, we’re looking to 6 to 8 inches possible in New Castle and Kent, and more in the 4 to 6 inch range possible in Sussex County,” said Klein.

A winter storm warning is in effect for all three counties until 7 pm Thursday.

Temperatures will not budge past the lower 30s for most of the day Thursday. The storm is expected to clear completely between 6 to 9 pm. Thursday night, but Klein says temperatures will drop down due to a cold front moving into the region.

“We’re looking at low temperatures down in the single digits on Thursday night," said Klein. "So it’s going to be another arctic blast for the region.”

Friday is predicted to be sunny, with temperatures climbing back up into the upper 20s to 30s.
