The COVID-19 pandemic isn’t stopping Earth Day festivities in the First State this year.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources is hosting a virtual scavenger hunt and other interactive activities to celebrate Earth Day’s 50th anniversary.

DNREC spokesperson Nikki Lavoie said it’s their way of celebrating with Delawareans.

“We had an event planned on Legislative Mall and an event throughout the State of Delaware,” Lavoie said.  “But, of course those in-person events had to be cancelled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.”

Lavoie said Earth Day is an opportunity to educate the public on the environment.  She added it will highlight how Delawareans play a role in protecting the environment.

“The virtual event that we’re hosting on facebook.com/DNREC is all around the way that you tend to do that whether its supporting cleaner transportation, energy conservation, renewable energy, recycling, and more,” Lavoie said.

The first Earth Day was nationally celebrated in 1970.  It led to the passage of landmark environmental laws like the Clean Air, Clean Water, and the Endangered Species Acts.

Those interested in this year’s events are encouraged to go to DNREC’s Facebook page.
