The crack of the bat, the cheer of the crowd and, yes, plenty of peanuts and Cracker Jacks. The Senior League Softball World Series is returning to Roxana, Delaware Monday, July 31.
Six U.S. teams and four international teams will be competing all next week in Roxana, Delaware to be the best in the world.
“Puerto Rico is tough and so is the Philippines. They’re usually top teams,” said series director Martin Donovan.
Other U.S. regional champions are still being decided. But Delaware’s District III team is automatically entered in the tournament as a perk of being the host state.
But that’s not the only perk.
“About 4 or 5 years ago we did an economic study and found the tournament brought in $1.3 million [in economic activity]," Donovan said. "And that doesn’t include the exposure we get from the games being on ESPN.”
This is the 43rd year of the tournament and its 13th in Delaware. It was previously held in Kentucky for five years.
The senior league includes girls age 14 to 16. Opening ceremonies begin Monday night at 5:00. Games begin immediately after at 6:00.
The tournament will be played on three fields at the Pyle Center in Roxana all next week.
The championship game on Sunday, August 6 will be broadcast on ESPN 2.
