Getting more Delawareans outdoors a 2017 goal

A Delaware nature group - Delaware Children in Nature - wants to encourage more children to get outdoors this upcoming year.

Delaware Children in Nature coordinator Angel Burns said parents with busy lives may have difficulty finding time to play with their children outdoors, and if they don’t have the time to watch their children, children themselves may be hindered from enjoying the outdoors.

So Using the Delaware Children in Nature Bill of Rights - a list of 10 outdoor suggestions, or "rights" - Children in Nature is establishing a theme for each month from January through October 2017 to get children and families playing outside.

"There's really a wonderful amount of outdoor resources for families and children to get involved in and a lot of times it’s just that people don’t know about it," Burns said.

Some of the themes include camping under the stars, catching a fish and playing in the waves.

It all kicks off January with the theme "go outside and play".

"We want to remind folks that January, and in fact, all the winter months, are a wonderful time to be outdoors," Burns said. "The stars in the sky are very bright during the winter time. All it takes is a little bundling up and you can have great nighttime viewing."
