Dover International Speedway continues to upgrade its safety features for NASCAR races.

Track officials say they are adding another 500 feet of SAFER barriers to the one-mile concrete oval.

The new barriers will added to existing outside walls in Turn 2, under the walkover bridge -- and Turn 4, entering the front stretch.

SAFER barrier walls better absorb the energy released when a car hits it – reducing the impact on the car and driver and making it less likely the car bounces back into the track.

The move comes after the track nearly 500 feet of new SAFER barriers last spring.

“We continue to improve our facility for all parties involved in NASCAR, including drivers, race teams and fans,” Dover International Speedway President and CEO Mike Tatoian said in a statement. “Safety is always our top priority and the added SAFER barriers will certainly benefit our competitors.

The new walls will be ready in time for the next NASCAR weekend in Dover Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.

Officials say they’re also putting in a 753-foot-long concrete wall to separate the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series garage area from the existing Dover Downs harness racing track.  That’s expected to create more hauler space in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series garage, and with it a safer environment there.
