State Parks celebrate anniversary with free admission

Delaware Public Media

Gov. Jack Markell has declared June 5 as Delaware State Parks Day.

The State Park system is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year.  Specifically on June 5th - the fifth day of the sixth month of the year - it will mark the occasion with free entry to state parks.

Parks Director Ray Bivens says the Delaware Tourism Office partnered with the department to waive not only all park entrance fees that day, but offer other perks as well.

“It also happens to be a license free fishing day. So anyone can come out and fish and not have to worry about having a fishing license that same weekend,” said Bivens. "There will alsobe hikes, there’s canoe trips, there will be family programs.”

Bivens says some of the systems oldest parks include Trap Pond and Brandywine Springs Park -- which is now it’s a New Castle County Park.

The only state parks that are not free on June 5th are Fort Delaware and the Brandywine Zoo, which will charge regular admission.
