Wesley College quarterback Joe Callahan made the final cut in the race for Division III football’s version of the Heisman Trophy.
For a second straight year - Callahan is one four finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy, which recognizes excellence on the field, in the classroom and in community service.
Callahan, Guilford quarterback Matt Pawlowski, St. Thomas tackle David Simmet and St. John’s running back Sam Sura remain in the running after the list of 10 semifinalists was trimmed to the final four.
Wesley’s senior signal-caller set an NCAA Division III single–season record for passing yards this year with 5,063 while threw for 55 touchdowns. Off the field, he’s maintained a 3.42 GPA and participated in various community projects.
Callahan is one of three Wolverines ever to reach the finals for the award - joining running back Brandon Steinheim in 1996 and safety Rocky Myers in 2003 and 2004. Myers won the award in 2004 - the only defensive player ever to take home the trophy and only player from an East Coast school to earn the honor.
The Gagliardi Trophy winner will be announced Friday December 16th as part of the festivities surrounding the Division Three title game – the Stagg Bowl.
Callahan and the Wolverines saw their 2015 season end last Saturday in an NCAA quarterfinal loss at Mount Union.
