Blue Rocks win playoff opener at Lynchburg

The Wilmington Blue Rocks post an impressive victory in their first post-season appearance since 2012.

The Blue Rocks shut down the Lynchburg Hillcats 6-1 in game one of the best of three Northern Division Championship series Wednesday night in Lynchburg.

Rocks’ starter Alec Mills tossed six shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six.   He earned the win.

First baseman Ryan O’Hearn sparked the Wilmington offense, going 2-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.

Game two of the series is in Wilmington Thursday night.  A win sends the Blue Rocks to the Mills Cup Carolina League title series for the first time since 2004 to face the survivor of the Southern Division final between Myrtle Beach and Winston-Salem.  Winston-Salem won the series opener of that series 4-2 Wednesday night.

A loss forces a third and decisive game with Lynchburg at Frawley Stadium Friday night.

The Blue Rocks haven’t won the Mills Cup since 1999.
