Downtown Dover enacts parking changes

Delaware Public Media

If you work, shop, eat or visit Downtown Dover, you need to be aware of some parking changes that took effect at the start of new year.

The changes are part of an effort by the City of Dover, the Downtown Dover Partnership and the Kent Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to attract economic development projects.

Downtown Dover Partnership operations manager Tina Bradbury says downtown parking is a topic that has come up regularly.

“There’s been multiple people talking about not being able to find parking. There’s also been business ventures looking to come Downtown. And there’s not adequate enough space, according to them, when they’re looking to open a new business, to accommodate their patrons,” said Bradbury.

And that prompted the Kent MPO to conduct a parking study that was completed in 2017 and recommended changes, including a parking garage.

“So in planning for that, we had to make some changes according to what was recommended in a parking study that was done by the Kent MPO,” Bradbury said.

The newly enacted recommended changes include permit parking in the Bradford/Minor and Governors Ave. lots and metered parking only in the Loockerman Way Lot.

Bradbury says more information on the new parking garage will be released by the City in the coming weeks.
