Delaware unemployment up for July

Delaware Public Media

Delaware’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate ticked up another tenth of a point in July to 4.3 percent.

State officials say the new upward trend isn’t worrying, despite following five months of significant declines.

Since last July, 18,000 more people have a job in the First State, the number of part-time workers fell by 8,300 and more of those in the labor force are at full-time gigs.

Nationwide, the unemployment rate stands at 4.9 percent – the same as it was in June.

Professional and business services, as well as the financial sector saw the biggest gains last month, while there were significant losses in the trade and transportation industries.

But nearly all of those industry groups have been hiring – some of them heavily – since last July.

Non seasonally adjusted jobless rates saw little turbulence from June to July.

Wilmington was the only city or county to see unemployment rise, inching up by one tenth a percent to an even seven percent.

Every other area shed between one and three tenths of a point.

  • New Castle County: 4.7 percent
  • Kent County: 5.2 percent
  • Sussex County: 3.8 percent
