All Sussex County middle schools have now completed the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation’s mural project.

The Freeman Foundation’s mural project started in 2013 at Georgetown Middle School, the first initiative in the Foundation’s Arts and Education program.

Freeman Foundation communications and public relations manager Alyson Cunningham says this month Laurel Middle School became the last school to complete a mural as part of the program.

“All 12 public middle schools in Sussex County have completed the project and we’re just really excited that this visual art project will live on in Sussex County Middle Schools for years to come,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham says the mural project offered students an hands-on opportunity to experience the visual arts, while trying to inspire them and build confidence and self-esteem.

“The legacy mural project was created to focus on positive character building through visual arts for middle school students. Each school selects a specific theme or trade to use in their murals, such as kindness, diversity, tolerance and honesty,” said Cunningham.

The mural project was led by local artist John Donato, who according to Cunningham, was invaluable at making the project happen.
