Delaware Contemporary hosts annual MFA Biennial

Regional Master of Fine Arts students and recent graduates make up the newest exhibit at the Delaware Contemporary, previously known as DCCA, in Wilmington.

Ranging in concept from U.S. history and consumerism to technology and international conflict, the MFA exhibit is smaller than previous shows.  Executive Director John Shipman says that’s because curator Katie Scarlett chose to focus on just a handful of artists.

“So for this show we have 7 artists exhibiting,” he says. “Other MFA biennials we might have up to 30 artists exhibiting but what I think that she was really looking for was those artists that are pushing their medium, pushing their message and that would also work well together as a single exhibition.”

In total, about 50 artists submitted among the 7 chosen.

Shipman helped craft similar MFA exhibits during his previous tenure at the Wilmington arts organization from 2000-2006.

“It was the show that I always looked forward to the most because it's great to work with those young artists and to see that evolving world view no matter what their experience is,” he says.

The Delaware Contemporary, previously knows at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts, hosts the MFA Biennial through March 4.

The organization recently partnered with The University of Delaware to create a two year assistantship with the school’s MFA candidates.

This piece is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
