Weekend tolls on Route 1 set to go up in August

You’ll start paying more to drive Route 1 on the weekends starting next month.

DelDOT announced Monday weekend tolls at the highway’s two main plazas, Biddles Corner and Dover, will increase by a dollar from $2 to $3 starting August 1st. The weekend rates will be in effect from 7pm on Friday nights to 11 pm on Sunday nights.

State officials announced the increase last month when it became clear the General Assembly would not consider Gov. Markell’s proposal to raise the state gas tax by 10 cents a gallon to fund transportation infrastructure projects.

The gas tax increase was expected to raise about $50 million a year. The toll increase is anticipated to net the state $10 million. That $10 million will be combined with $20 million in borrowing this fiscal year to fund paving projects.

Weekday tolls will remain the same at the two plazas and there are no changes to the Route 1 ramp tolls.
