DelDOT making progress as St. Patrick's Day storm eases up

First State roadways are improving following our latest blast of wintry weather.

With snow easing up in many areas, DelDOT spokesperson Jim Westhoff says the agency has made significant progress clearing roads in all three counties.

“They’ve been doing an extraordinary job, you know, well above any expectations that we’ve had. We’ve been working all night long again and again," said Westhoff. "They were out since 8 o’clock last night, all night as everyone else slept and this morning. And They’ll stay out until these roads are clear.”

Westhoff adds main roadways are looking good now and that DelDOT hopes to have all the secondary roads plowed at least once before nightfall when temperatures start to drop again.

The Agency’s biggest job was in Sussex County, especially near the coast, where snowfall totals reached as high as nine inches in Lewes. Kent County saw 7.5 inches in Harrington and 5 in Dover.

In New Castle County, the snow fell in the southern part of the county in Odessa, which reported 5 inches. Wilmington was spared the brunt of the snow this time around and topped out at 3 inches of new snow.

The Saint Patrick’s Day storm closed all public schools in the state Monday, along with Delaware State University’s main campus in Dover and government offices in Kent and Sussex Counties and the City of Dover.
