Nemours recognized nationally for orthopedics, endocrinology

Nemours A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children in North Wilmington is ranked in the top 50 in nine categories by a national publication.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Nemours the seventh best hospital in the country for orthopedics. Hospital staff say it sees about 40,000 orthopedics patients per year.

Nemours also ranked 14th in gastroenterology and the 30th best for endocrinology and diabetes.

“It’s really, I think, more reflective every year of the clinical care we’re delivering, rather than just reputation nationally,” said Stephen Lawless, the senior vice president for Nemours Health Care System.

Endocrinology and Diabetes was one of three categories Nemours earned recognition in after going unranked a year ago. Neonatology and Urology also moved into the U.S News and World Report ratings.

“I think [Nemours] fills a beautiful niche between Philadelphia and Baltimore, for example. It’s a positively market. Children’s hospitals — Johns Hopkins — score very high in a lot of the specialities. People in this whole area should be very fortunate because you have a lot of choices,” Lawless said.

Though it didn’t rank, Lawless said he’s especially excited about the hospital’s new epilepsy and autism center which went live in March.

This is the eighth year Nemours has participated in the national survey.
