Sussex County’s annual holiday food drive is underway this year.
The “Pack the Pod” drive is connected to the county’s annual Caroling on The Circle event - now in its 35th year.
And Sussex County communications director Chip Guy says it has become a tradition for the county.
“This is something that we’ve been doing since the mid 1980’s. And we’ve had tremendous success in establishing an annual holiday tradition, with it being the musical event to help get people into the holiday spirit, but more importantly, it has doubled as a food drive,” Guy said.
Guy says the County asks everyone who attends Caroling on The Circle in Georgetown on Monday, December 3 to bring a canned food item, which will help feed needy families throughout the holidays.
And if you can’t make it to the event, donations will still be accepted through the end of December. They can be dropped off between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the County Administrative Office building next to the Courthouse, the County Administrative Offices on Route 113 or the Coastal Airport terminal building on Rudder Lane.
Last year, the food drive collected more than 27,000 items that were handed out to area pantries, churches and food banks.
Since it started in the 1980’s, Caroling on The Circle has collected an estimated 700,000 items for local food pantries, churches and food banks.
Caroling on The Circle is held regardless of weather. In the event of rain or snow, it will be moved inside the Fire Hall on South Bedford Street.
