Second phase of Tri-Valley Trail opens in Newark

The second phase of the Tri-Valley Trail in White Clay Creek State Park is now open to the public.

State officials and Sen. Tom Carper cut the ribbon on the just completed 1.1 mile section late last week. The first phase of the Tri-Valley Trail was finished in 2017.

The now 2.8 mile trail connects to an 18-mile trail system in the greater Newark area. The new section links the Pike Creek area and the City of Newark.

State Rep. Paul Baumbach said the section of the Tri-Valley Trail has been a long time coming.

“That network of connecting up the county parks with the city parks through this state park," he said. "This is that final piece, at least within White Clay Creek State Park.”

DNREC Secretary Shawn Garvin said this adds to the many activities available at White Clay.

“If you want to bike, if you want to walk, if you want to fish, if you want to hunt, listen to a concert. You know, in the fall, do a hay ride,” he said.

A primitive camping area along the trail is under construction and will be finished next month.

The project got more than 1.8 million dollars in federal funding.
