Newark places recycling program at residents' fingertips with new app

The City of Newark is trying to make recycling easier for its residents.

The City of Newark is teaming up with the largest national recycling education network in an effort to entice more residents to recycle.

The recycling education network called “Recycle Coach” is now making Newark’s recycling program more readily available online.

Jayme Gravell, chief communications officer for the City of Newark explains users can interact with the "Recycle Coach" app in multiple ways.

“Our residents can download the app and it will send them push notifications - reminders for when their recycling and their trash is picked up," said Gravell. " If a resident has a question about which item is recyclable, there is a function in the app - it’s called “What Goes Where?”

Gravell says “What Goes Where?” allows people to type in any search word, such as plastic straws or Christmas trees, and it will let them know if the item is recyclable or trash.

Gravell says the“Recycle Coach” partnership was made possible through a $5,900 grant from the Recycling Public Advisory Council administered by DNREC.

The partnership runs three-years and is fully funded by the grant. Gravell says if the City wants to continue the program after that, it would have to pay for it.

The “Recycle Coach” app is free to download and is available from the iTunes Store and Google Play.
