GOP leader in Sussex County removed over social media posts

Delaware Public Media

A Sussex County Republican Party official has been removed from her position after comments she made online were criticized as anti-Semitic.

Nelly Jordan was vice-chair of the Sussex County GOP. She was elected to her position by the Sussex County GOP Executive Committee, which removed her Monday night after a no-confidence vote that passed by a slim, two-vote margin.

Jane Brady, Chair of the Republican Party of Delaware, condemned Jordan’s Facebook posts about “Jews” and national politics as “offensive, hurtful and anti-Semitic” early this month.

Jordan’s removal follows the resignation of New Castle County GOP Chair Chris Rowe after he was criticized for using a homophobic slur in a comment on Facebook.

Jordan will not be eligible to run for any position in the Sussex County GOP for four years, according to a committee spokesperson.

Sophia Schmidt is a Delaware native. She comes to Delaware Public Media from NPR’s Weekend Edition in Washington, DC, where she produced arts, politics, science and culture interviews.
