Frontier bringing airline service back to First State

After almost five years, Frontier Airlines is coming back to Wilmington-New Castle Airport.

“We are returning to Wilmington, Delaware with nonstop service starting on May 14, 2020. We’ll be introducing nonstop service once again to Orlando three days a week,” said Daniel Shurz, the senior vice president of commercial operations for Frontier Airlines.

The three days of service will be Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, and the fares to Orlando will be as low as $29.

Poor customer service caused many customers to get frustrated with Frontier’s previous foray into Delaware.  The airline offered service to as many eight cities before that short run ended in June 2015.

Shurz explains why he expects a different result this time.

“We’ve changed in the sense that we have reduced our costs since 2015, and we’ve become more financially successful overall which is a testament to how we have changed the business, so it makes us a better long term partner for airports and a better long term partner for communities because we our financially stable, successful airline,” he said.

Shurz adds that only flights to Orlando will be offered initially, with the hope to expand later.

“I expect this to be the start of a bigger partnership. We’re starting smaller this time, we’re not rushing in with too much service," said Shurz. "We know Florida is the biggest destination from the northeast. We have our second biggest base operation today in Orlando, so we’re starting with Orlando service.”

A variety of upgrades are planned for Wilmington-New Castle as it prepares to welcome Frontier Airlines back

“Going to a really important, sought-out destination like Florida is going to be a success, and we’ll build on that success," said Carney. "And it will make our state and our county even more exciting to visit.”

Delaware River Bay and Authority Executive Director Tom Cook expects upgrades to the airport to make the whole experience for fliers more customer friendly.

Those upgrades include installing a more modern and faster TSA check baggage scanning system, faster security screening, new ticketing counters, and gate area seating.
