Eden Park renovations continue on schedule

The $2.4 million renovations at Eden Park are “proceeding on schedule,” according to a statement from Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki Monday.

City officials announced last fall the South Wilmington park will get a new full-size, synthetic turf field, a new scoreboard and new playground equipment. The park’s three pools will be recoated, and a new pool filtration system will be installed.

According to officials, work has started on the athletic fields and the pools. The city will start taking bids for work on the new playground, the picnic pavilions and the parking lot this month.

Marie Reed is president of the civic association of Southbridge, just north of the park. She told Delaware Public Media in October when the plans were announced that residents often talk to her about the park’s old benches and its swing sets with no swings.

Reed said last fall that she hoped to be able to coordinate community input about the park renovations. She said after a 2012 shooting in the park, security there is a priority for the community.

The park is used for youth sports practices— including the City’s flag football league.

?The renovations are expected to be finished this summer.
