Cape May-Lewes Ferry reverts back to COVID restrictions

Delaware Public Media

The Cape May Lewes Ferry is going back to a vehicle travel only policy as coronavirus cases rise.

Starting Monday all foot and bicycle traffic on the ferry will be suspended once again as a precaution against the spread of the virus.

Passengers are encouraged to remain in their vehicles except to roam the outer decks, use the restroom or to purchase from a limited selection of food and beverages.

Seating in the passenger salon area will be closed.

“We’ve made this decision to take a proactive step to protect the health and wellbeing of our passengers and crew,” said Delaware River and Bay Authority spokesman Jim Salmon.

The ferry is also closing the gift shop and ticket counters at its terminal. The bar and coffee shop there will remain open.

The ferry prohibited bicycle and foot traffic early on during the pandemic, but eased those restrictions over the summer.

The ferry is not reducing its public sailing schedule, but Salmon says the new restrictions will be in effect indefinitely.
