A series of major projects are in the works at Cape Henlopen State Park.
Delaware State Parks are receiving more than $17 million from this year's Bond Bill and Community Redevelopment Grant Program
And about $5.5 million will fund improvements across the over 5,000-acres at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes.
“Work is beginning on the Cape Henlopen Fishing Pier to do some modifications and updates on the pilings on that," said Ray Bivens, director of Delaware’s Division of Parks and Recreation. "In the Bond Bill for this year specifically for Cape Henlopen was money that’ll be in the future to help with major renovations to the Biden Center, which we use as an overnight environmental education center, as well as a training center for teachers, for our staff and for a variety of different organizations.”
Bivens notes that the Environmental Training Center was built in 1962 as a Naval training facility. It was then renamed after then-Senator Joe Biden in 1998 to thank him for his work transferring Department of Defense property over to Delaware.
Bivens says Cape Henlopen State Park’s wastewater system will also be addressed soon as part of this set of projects.
“Our wastewater at Cape Henlopen is a very older, outdated system," said Bivens. "We’re on a path that we’re going to be taking our sewage out of the Park to the City of Lewes. We’ve been working on that with them for a couple of years; it requires some upgrades to make that happen but it will be at a much better treatment level.”
Other improvements coming to Cape Henlopen State Park include a new park office building.
