There’s a new license plate for sale in Delaware.

The new plate, featuring the American horseshoe crab, will help motorists who purchase it show off their love for Delaware’s shoreline.

“The proceeds of the plate benefit two wonderful organizations that are working to protect our Bays in Delaware….the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary (PDE) and the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays,” said Chris Bason, executive director for the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays.

He says the plates are $50 and can be purchased online or in-person at the Delaware Department of Transportation’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) locations throughout the First State.

Horseshoe crabs are arthropods and are often called "living fossils" because their bodies have remained unchanged for 450 million years.

Every May and June, horseshoe crabs come ashore by the thousands to spawn along the Inland Bays and Delaware’s shoreline.

The horseshoe crab plate joins Delaware"s other variety of special plates - including an environmental lighthouse plate, farm preservation plate and a Ducks Unlimited plate.

DMV Director Jana Simpler says 4,080 special plates were sold in 2018 and that number increased to 4,757 in 2019.
