Rehoboth Beach's new mayor promises transparency, communication

Stan Mills was sworn in as the new mayor of Rehoboth Beach Friday.

He defeated previous mayor Paul Kuhns in last month’s municipal election.

Mills says he intends to improve transparency, and seek ways to do even more to communicate with public.

“I believe our city of Rehoboth Beach government has the most robust communications program of all 57 municipalities in Delaware. This is all being done to promote having an informed constituency and again, to solicit your input,” Mills said.

One initiative to improve access and engagement will be through email, so residents can get news about the city straight to their inbox.

Mills reminds the commissioners and the public about the oath of office they take, that the power of the board flows from the people of Rehoboth Beach.

“In which to remind us all that the power of our offices come from the people we serve, that's you," Mills said. "For us to serve you well I believe we need to solicit and receive your input on the topics we are discussing. And we need to ensure that you get accurate information, which is what communications is all about.”

Mills takes over amid the COVID-19 pandemic, where local businesses have seen millions of dollars in lost revenue throughout the year.

Two new commissioners, Patrick Gosset and Jay Lagree, were also sworn in Friday, filling seats vacated by former commissioners.

The new board approved a street paving project focused on the south side of the city.

It also continued debate over changing city code to encourage construction of underground parking, while ensuring flooding does not hamper such projects.
