The Sussex County Council recently named a new planning and zoning director.

Sussex County has a new planning and zoning director.

The Sussex County Council recently named Jamie Whitehouse to the role, replacing Janelle Cornwall who resigned to take a planning position with the City of Lewes.

"Janelle has been here for a number of years. And Janelle has been instrumental in growing the department," said Whitehouse. "So I have to continue where Janelle left off.”

And Whitehouse says that includes a number of  priorities.

“Implementing the comprehensive plan, which has now been signed off by the Governor and actually bringing those strategies within the comprehensive plan to fruition," Whitehouse said. "Also streamlining the office - introducing new procedures - and training some of our new staff who have recently joined the office.”

The Sussex County Planning and Zoning office now has nearly a dozen employees.

As for the comprehensive plan, Whitehouse says it identifies a need for additional housing for those moving to Sussex County through 2045.

Whitehouse adds there are concerns from the general public on where to put that housing and he plans to address those concerns as they are raised.

Whitehouse, a native of Walsall, United Kingdom, moved to the U-S with his wife and children in 2016.  He joined Sussex County as a staff planner in 2017 and most recently served as Planning and Zoning manager.
