Delaware Dept. of Correction receives federal funds to address recidivism

Delaware has won $1.5 million in federal grants for inmate reentry services.

Officials from the Delaware Department of Correction say the money will help 700 inmates with cognitive behavioral therapy, probation case management, job training, limited financial support and equipment for inmate programs.

Gov. John Carney said the state needs to do a better job of preparing inmates to transition back into society.

“It’s going to be better for all of us," he said. "It’s going to remove a burden for those of you here at the Dept. of Correction. They’ll be better parents, they’ll be better members of the community. It’s better for all us.”

Carney signed an executive order last month creating a reentry commission to evaluate current policies to address the recidivism rate.

About 76 percent of Delaware’s ex-offenders are rearrested within three years.
