Two candidates vying to secure their party’s control of the state Senate have raised more than $200,000 combined with less than a month to go before the 10th District special election.
So far, Democrat Stephanie Hansen leads the fundraising race with nearly $108,000 in donations since around Christmas last year.
Hansen also loaned herself $20,000. She’s spent about half of that money on mailers, billboards and campaign strategists, among others, with nearly $64,000 cash on hand.
Her Republican opponent, John Marino, raised more than $95,000 and has slightly more cash on hand at nearly $68,000.
Libertarian Joseph Lanzendorfer took in a little more than $300 since the beginning of the year.
The race to fill this vacant seat has huge implications for the balance of power in the General Assembly, Currently, the state Senate has 10 Democrats and 10 Republicans. Democrats have controlled the upper chamber for more than four decades.
Voters have their say Feb. 25.
