Barney joins race for Delaware's lone Congressional seat

Delaware Public Media

Another Democrat is throwing his hat into the ring to replace Congressman John Carney.

Sean Barney will officially launch his campaign for Congress Tuesday.  He joins fellow Democrats State Sen. Bryan Townsend, State Rep. Bryon Short and former State Labor Secretary Lisa Blunt Rochester in the race.

On the GOP side, former Wyoming mayor Hans Reigle has announced he's running and Rose Izzo has filed paperwork to do so.

Carney is stepping down from Congress after serving three terms in Washington. He is running to become Delaware’s next governor.

Sean Barney, who is an Iraq war veteran, was a senior aide to Delaware’s senior senator Tom Carper and a policy director for Governor Jack Markell.

Barney was a Democratic candidate for state Treasurer in 2014. He lost to Republican Ken Simpler in the general election.
