Voters cast ballots in 18th House District special election Saturday

Delaware Public Media

Newark-area voters head to the polls Saturday to select a new state representative in 18th House District.

They’ll choose between Republican Eileen O’Shaughnessy-Coleman and Democrat David Bentz in the special election to replace former Rep. Michael Barbieri.

If the GOP picks up the seat, Democrats will lose their super majority in the House and no longer be able to pass tax and fee bills by themselves.

Democrats hold a solid registration advantage, but the district does have a strong Republican history, repeatedly electing former House Speaker Terry Spence for more than 20 years.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
