Christina School District superintendent takes leave of absence

Christina School District

There's a change at the top in the Christina School District.  Superintendent Dr. Freeman Williams has submitted documentation to begin a leave of absence, effective immediately

Since personnel matters are confidential, the school district can't say if Freeman’s leave is paid or not, or how long it will last. The board will discuss how to proceed at next week's scheduled board meeting. A district spokesperson says no interim superintendent has been named at this time, but it is possible the board will consider that or at least discuss it at its meeting.

Williams’ decision comes as Christina grapples with finalizing 9.5 million in budget cuts after district voters twice turned down referendums to hike school taxes, once in February and then in May.

The board is scheduled to consider nearly 5 million of those cuts when it gets together Tuesday.

Key items up for consideration are how many extra pay for extra responsibility (EPER) positions to fill – like coaches of sports teams, band directors, moderators of extracurricular activities and department heads – and whether to continue contracting with Delaware State Police for school resource officers.
