Grove Park Canal Access Dock project set to start in Rehoboth Beach

Work begins later this year to improve access to the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal in Sussex County.

The City of Rehoboth Beach Commissioners recently approved the Grove Park Canal Access Dock project.

“The project got started through the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal Improvement Association (LRCIA)," said City of Rehoboth Beach projects coordinator Evan Miller. "Their intention was to construct a dock at Grove Park for the purpose of - potentially in the future - allowing a water taxi between Rehoboth Beach and Lewes - overall with the intention of cutting down on the traffic potentially seen on Route 1.”

Miller says this project entails building an ADA-accessible dock just outside of Grove Park on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal.

“It’ll include lighting, security cameras and other safety measures, with the intention of providing a dock that can be used for boats," said Miller. "It can also be used for the purposes of fishing and a kayak launch will be constructed as well.”

The project cost is $1.35 million, and Miller says there are various funding sources for it.

“A majority of the project cost will come from a mix of donations, contributions and grants," said Miller. "And as it stands right now, some funding from the City of Rehoboth Beaches’ annual budget.”

Miller notes the state is among thoe chipping in, contributing funds from a variety of sources including the Bond Bill and Community Transportation Fund.  The Crystal Trust Foundation is also committing dollars to the project.

Miller expects the dock will be completed by summer 2021.

He notes this project is 10-years in the making.
