The First State is about to get its first blast of cold air of the season and Code Purple officials are working to make sure the homeless have a place to go to get out of the cold.
Code Purple shelters are slated to open Friday and Saturday nights when the forecast calls for temps to dip as low as the mid-20s in some places.
Code Purple Sussex County executive director Nikki Gonzalez says right now she’s busy getting ready and is looking for people to help.
"[We're asking for help] bringing dinners, for donations. Everything is needed right now. Quick and easy meals at first cause we never exactly know how many will be coming through the doors the first couple of nights, which it looks like will be happening Friday night and Saturday night,” said Gonzalez.
Code Purple shelters in Sussex County will open their doors every night from December 15 through March 31, 2018.
But Gonzalez says between now and December 15, the shelters will be open on an as needed basis, like this weekend when overnight temps are expected to be below-freezing.
“We have a shelter in Seaford for men only at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Parish Hall. We have a shelter for women and women and children at Gateway Fellowship and we have a shelter in Milford for men only at Avenue United Methodist Church,” said Gonzalez.

Women can meet at The CROSS for dinner at 7:00pm. Transportation will be provided to Gateway at 8:30pm and then back to Seaford in the morning.
