Delaware unemployment inches closer to 4 percent

Delaware Public Media

Delaware continues to see steep job growth in the state as the unemployment rate ticks down to 4.2 percent in April.

That’s down two-tenths of a point from March and is nearly a full percent below the national jobless rate of five percent.

Since last April, it’s the fastest job growth the state has seen since 1999, netting nearly 16,000 new jobs over that time period or 3.5 percent.

Nationwide, nonfarm employment increased 1.9 percent in that same period.

Business and professional services saw huge gains over the past month, adding 1,500 new jobs in April and nearly 5,000 over the past year.

There were some steep declines in retail trade shedding 800 jobs over the past month, as well as slight drop-offs in government, construction and manufacturing.

Jobless rates in all three counties and the state’s major cities either declined or remained steady in April.
