Delaware unemployment rate drops in January

Delaware Public Media

The First State’s unemployment rate fell in January.

The State Department of Labor says Delaware’s jobless rate fell two-tenths of a point to 4.7 percent, down from a revised 4.9 percent in December.

The state is also below the national unemployment rate, which stands at 4.9 percent.

More people are working with fewer unemployed in the state. The Labor Department reports 2,400 more state residents were employed in January than in December while the number of unemployed fell by 500.

But non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rates across the state are generally up.

Wilmington stands at six point seven percent, up seven tenths of a percent from December. Dover was up 1.1 percent from 5.6 in December to 6.7 in January.

All three counties were also up - with Sussex County at 5.7 percent, Kent County at 5.3, and New Castle at 4.8.

The State Labor Department also notes that its revised data for 2015 as a whole shows more robust job growth for the year. It says Delaware gained 11,000 jobs in 2015 - up 2.4 percent for the year.  In January, it reported that gain at 1.6 percent or just over 7,300 jobs.
