State Police advise Delawareans of phone scams

Delaware Public Media

Delaware State Police are warning residents of a surge in reported phone scams.

Last month, a 68-year-old victim contacted 911 to report that a person with a foreign accent called and informed him that his son had been in a car accident and injured another person.  The caller demanded two thousand dollars to cover the expenses and prevent further injury to the their son.

The victim stated that once the phone call was received he and his wife were able to make contact with their son and determine that he was okay.  The victim then hung up and contacted 911.

Another individual called State Police to report a call from an unknown suspect with a heavy middle-eastern accent advising her she was eligible for a nine thousand dollar U.S. Federal Government grant.  The caller then asked for the woman’s name, address, and home phone number.  The woman got off the line and then called the number back. When she questioned them about how they got her information, the subject hung up the phone.

State Police say there have been several other incidents reported recently with callers soliciting money.  Troopers advise residents not to wire money, or provide the caller with any information. If something seems suspicious, call 911.
