First State Compassion Center open for business

Delaware Public Media

The First State Compassion Center is formally open for business in Wilmington.

Medical marijuana has been legal since 2011 in Delaware, but Friday was the first day medical marijuana cardholders actually had somewhere that could provide them cannabis legally. Delaware residents with a medical marijuana card can go to the dispensary to buy the drug in its raw flower form, as well as in oils and salves.

By lunchtime, there was a long line of people waiting to get inside the First State Compassion Center - hours after it opened.

John Peters had just left with an exit bag full of medical marijuana.

"I have screw and rods in my back, I had a really bad injury at work. I use the cannabis to get off of medications that I’ve previously been on. I’ve been on probably every kind of opiate that is out there," he said.

Peters said he waited over an hour for his prescription and left with almost an ounce of marijuana.

The First State Compassion Center is currently the only medical marijuana dispensary in Delaware.
