Icy roads thawing out across First State, but more wintry weather may be coming

Delaware Public Media

Delaware commuters should have an easier time Monday evening than they did Monday morning.

Valerie Meola, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, says the winter storm that caused school closings and delays throughout the state has passed, but adds the First State could be in store for more Tuesday.

"It looks like the next 24 hours aren’t going to be all that bad in Delaware," said Meola. "The weather should be fairly nice through the rest of the day [Monday] and through [Monday] night, and then it’s more toward [Tuesday] afternoon when we’ll start to see conditions deteriorate."

Meola says the forecast calls for a wintry mix that will begin to intensify starting Tuesday afternoon.

"For Tuesday it looks like we’re going to start seeing some snow move into the area, and that’s going to be more toward Tuesday afternoon and evening. It’s going to mix with some sleet and some rain as we go through the nighttime," said Meola.

Meola adds parts of northern Delaware could see freezing rain as well.

Forecasts predict that less than half an inch of accumulation could fall through Tuesday night throughout the state.
