Election 2014: A look back

Election Day is over and the results are in. Delaware voters return Democrats Chris Coons and John Carney to the US Senate and US House by healthy double digit margins, while making Lt. Gov Matt Denn the state’s next Attorney General – with a 14 percentage point win over Republican Ted Kittila
But the major headline from this cycle was that Delaware’s GOP enjoyed a level of success it hadn’t seen in years. The party managed its first statewide win by a non –incumbent in 20 years as Ken Simpler beat Sean Barney in the treasurer’s race – and incumbent Tom Wagner won another term as state Auditor. Plus, the GOP managed to gain ground in the General Assembly.

This week is Delaware’s annual Grief Awareness Week. Started in 2009 and organized by the Delaware Grief Awareness Consortium, the week features a variety of events offering opportunities for people to learn and express feelings related to grief and loss in First State.
Among those working on this issue is the one non-profit in Delaware dedicated to assisting children dealing with grief and tragedies – Supporting Kidds. The organization is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this month and Delaware Public Media contributor Larry Nagengast took a look at the work it has done and is still doing. (More)
UD conference offers insight on brown dwarfs

In 1994, a group of Spanish astrophysicists discovered the very first brown dwarf--a ball of gas in outer space that’s too big to be a planet, but too small to be a star. Twenty years later, over a thousand brown dwarfs have been discovered. And the researchers who study them are unlocking clues to how planets form. Delaware Public Media’s Eli Chen spoke to astrophysicists at a recent brown dwarf and exoplanet conference at the University of Delaware. (More)
History Matters: Between the Rivers tour shows glimpse of Market St. past

It’s said that in many places history is all around us. Take a city like Wilmington, for instance. The city today is nothing like it was 50, 60 or 100 years ago. But stroll up a street like Market St. downtown and hints of what went before remain, if you look closely enough.
In this month’s History Matters, produced in conjunction with the Delaware Historical Society, that’s exactly what we did with Barbara Jobe, education volunteer at the Historical Society, who leads Between The Rivers walking tour of Market Street and its history. (More)
Enlighten Me: Veterans issues in the First State

On Tuesday, Americans will acknowledge the contributions made by our nation's veterans in protecting the freedoms we sometimes take for granted. Veterans Day is intended to honor all those who served in the military.
Veterans Day has personal meaning for Paul Davis, co-founder of the Delaware Veterans Coalition and the State President of the Vietnam Veterans of America, who served two tours in Vietnam.
Davis is a tireless advocate for First State vets and for this week’s Enlighten Me sat down with Delaware Public Media's Cathy Carter to talk about a range of veterans issues. (More)
