Delaware State falls in 2018 football opener

Delaware State Univ.

It was a forgettable first game for new Delaware State University football coach Rod Milstead.

Milstead and the Hornets were blasted by the University of Buffalo 48-10 in their 2018 season opener.

It's the sixth straight year Delaware State has lost its season opener.

Three DSU turnovers in the first half helped Buffalo race out to a 34-3 lead and the Hornets never recovered.  Delaware State committed four turnovers in all in the contest.

“I’m pleased with our effort, even when we were way down, but we have to clean up some communication and execution issues,” said Milstead. “I give Buffalo a great deal of credit, but it’s difficult to compete against a quality FBS team when turning over the ball so many times.”

Buffalo quarterback Tyree Jackson threw a career-high six touchdown passes to lead the Bulls.

The Hornets look to rebound next week when they play the second of four in a row on the road to start the season at St. Francis (PA).
