Blue Rocks 2016 tickets go on sale Monday

Delaware Public Media

There will be a little spring in the air Monday, despite the recent run of icy temperatures and the potential for winter weather

The Wilmington Blue Rocks put tickets for their 2016 season on sale Monday morning.  And for the third straight year, they are running a one-day ticket offer that turns the cold weather to fans’ advantage.

Director of Ticket Operations Stefani Rash says when they open the ticket window, the team will use the temperature to determine how much the seats will cost for the home opener on April 7 against Potomac.

“Whatever the temperature is at 8am, that is the price of tickets in cents for tickets on opening night," said Rash.  So, last season it was 4 degrees, so it was four cents and the year before that it was 20 degrees, so it was 20 cents.”

Rash adds that fans seem to enjoy the unique opportunity for really cheap seats.

“Well, this will be the third year we’ve done it and the years we’ve done it, opening night has pretty much been sold out. So people come and they come full force," said Rash. "You really can’t beat bringing a family of four [to a game] for 16 cents.  You really can’t go anywhere for a good night out at that cost anymore.  So when this comes out, people really rally behind it and the team.”

The team uses Fahrenheit, not Celsius to make the temperature call – and, no, wind chill is not factored in.  If it’s below zero, tickets would be free.

The offer is only available Monday, but is good whether you purchase in person, by phone or online.  If you show up in person, the Rocks will be offering free breakfast and lunch and some other specials.

The Blue Rocks reached the Mills Cup Carolina League championship series last year before losing to Myrtle Beach.   They were third in the league in attendance averaging just over 41 hundred fans per game.
