Ommelanden shooting range reopens with upgrades

After a six-month hiatus, the Ommelanden Shooting Range is reopening with upgrades for Northern Delaware trap and skeet shooters.

DNREC program manager Craig Rhoads says they weren’t anticipating to be closed for that long.

“We were equally frustrated. We were thinking we’d be down for somewhere in the neighborhood of two to three months when the machines went down, but we were not anticipating being closed this long. So we are very relieved and I’m sure that the public is also,” Rhoads said.

The long wait, he says was due to a backlog at the manufacturers and the fact that each machine is custom made.

“The machines that we have up there are commercial machines that aren’t just something you go to your local Walmart or Cabela’s and buy off the shelf, so they did have to be made specifically for us.”

The upgrades expand the space for shooters, with three fields dedicated to trap and two for skeet. The range is also open to archers and rifle and pistol shooters. New targets will also be available for those ranges.

The facility near New Castle is open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
